In 1994, she was selected by NASA as an astronaut candidate, and in 1997, she made her first journey into space aboard Space Shuttle Columbia STS-87. This historic mission made her the first Indian-born woman to fly into space.
The Tragic Columbia Disaster (STS-107)
Kalpana Chawla’s second space mission was Space Shuttle Columbia STS-107, which launched on January 16, 2003. Along with her six crewmates, she conducted more than 80 scientific experiments in space, ranging from microgravity research to life sciences.
Tragically, during launch, a piece of insulation foam broke off from the external fuel tank and struck Columbia’s left wing. This damage compromised the shuttle’s heat protection system, which proved fatal during re-entry.
On February 1, 2003, as the Columbia re-entered Earth’s atmosphere, hot gases entered through the damaged wing, causing the spacecraft to break apart over Texas. All seven crew members, including Kalpana Chawla, perished in the disaster.
